چکیده

Using atomic force microscopy we have studied the nanomechanical response to nanoindentations of surfaces of highly oriented molecular organic thin films (thickness<1000 nm). The Young’s modulus E can be estimated from the elastic deformation using Hertzian mechanics. For the quasi-one-dimensional metal tetrathiafulvalene tetracyanoquinodimethane E;20 GPa and for the a phase of the p-nitrophenyl nitronyl nitroxide radical E;2 GPa. Above a few GPa, the surfaces deform plastically as evidenced by discrete discontinuities in the indentation curves associated to molecular layers being expelled by the penetrating tip. © 2001 American Vacuum Society. @DOI: 10.1116/1.1368662#

Probing nanotribological and electrical properties of organic molecular films with atomic force microscopy.

Structural aspects of organic molecular films, such as disordering, packing density, molecular bending or tilts, and phase separation, influence electrical properties as well as friction and adhesion. This indicates a correlation between nanomechanical and charge transport properties of molecular films at the molecular scale. In this review, we highlight the recent studies on correlations betwe...

Nanomechanical properties of solvent cast polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer blends and self-assembled block copolymers

The nanomechanical properties of solvent-cast polymer thin films have been investigated using PeakForceTM Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping. The samples consisted of films of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) obtained after the dewetting of toluene solution on a polymeric brush layer. Additionally, we have probed the mechanical properties of poly(styrene-b-methyl methacryl...

Atomic Simulation of Temperature Effect on the Mechanical Properties of Thin Films

The molecular dynamic technique was used to simulate the nano-indentation test on the thin films of silver, titanium, aluminum and copper which were coated on the silicone substrate. The mechanical properties of the selected thin films were studied in terms of the temperature. The temperature was changed from 193 K to 793 K with an increment of 100 K. To investigate the effect of temperature on...

Ultrasonic force microscopy: detection and imaging of ultra-thin molecular domains.

The analysis of the formation of ultra-thin organic films is a very important issue. In fact, it is known that the properties of organic light emitting diodes and field effect transistors are strongly affected by the early growth stages. For instance, in the case of sexithiophene, the presence of domains made of molecules with the backbone parallel to the substrate surface has been indirectly e...
